In Junior Cycle, students take the following core subjects:

English, Irish, Mathematics,

Religion ,C.S.P.E., S.P.H.E.

Computers, P.E., Science

First Year students study all of the following subjects for the first three months and continue to study their chosen six up to Junior Certificate Level. One of those six subjects must be Science as it is now a compulsory subject up to Junior Certificate in the Coláiste. Students will choose it in either line one or two as laid out below when choosing option subjects.

Science or Home Economics

Science or MTW (wood)

Technology or French

Geography or Music

Technical Graphics or History

Business or Art


Transition Year is available in the Coláiste as an option.

The Transition Year Programme has become an integral part of the education process nationally. During the year students are given the opportunity and space to mature and develop at their own pace without the pressure of examinations. It gives them an insight into the world of work and most importantly, in line with the ethos of the Coláiste, it helps to build confidence and self-development through the involvement in activities such as drama, music and sport.

A NCCA (National Council for Curriculum & Assessment) survey has shown that students who avail of this maturing year have a big advantage in the Leaving Certificate over their peers who do the examination in five years.

The Transition Year courses, subjects and activities can consist of the following:

Mathematics Art Outdoor Pursuits Work Experience

English Irish French German

Science Music Photography S.P.H.E.

ECDL I.T. Debating Religion

In order to maintain the study ethos and academic focus, Transition Year students study elements of the Senior Cycle course as listed below.


In Senior Cycle, Students take English, Irish, Mathematics, Religion, Career Guidance and PE as Core subjects.

PLUS 4 of the following subjects:

Accounting, Business, Construction Studies, French, Geography, German, History, Home Economics (Social & Scientific), Music, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Art, Technical Drawing.


The LCVP compliments the traditional Leaving Certificate by preparing students for the world of work in a quickly changing and diverse technological age. LCVP students study two modules as well as subjects from the traditional Leaving Certificate. These modules include Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education. The link modules are activity based and to assist in carrying out these activities, students have access to the most up-to-date computers and audio-visual equipment.
